Can Porcelain Veneers Help Me Have the Perfect Smile?
Have you ever wondered how you would look with the perfect smile? Have you looked in the mirror and imagined yourself with white, straight, even teeth? Don’t despair! It is absolutely possible to have the smile of your dreams. A dentist well trained in smile design techniques can make your dreams a reality. With the dental materials, techniques and procedures available today, almost anything is possible.
One of the most popular procedures to correct uneven, chipped or discolored teeth is dental veneers. There are two main categories of dental veneers: direct and indirect. Direct veneers are done by the dentist in the office by directly bonding composite resin onto the tooth to change the shape, size or color. Indirect veneers are fabricated by a dental laboratory from molds of the teeth and then are bonded onto the teeth by the dentist. Indirect veneers can be made from either porcelain or heat treated composite resin. Porcelain veneers are very beautiful and natural looking yet strong and durable. Porcelain veneers are very thin facings that cover the front of a tooth. They can make a tooth longer or wider if needed and can mask discolorations. If a tooth is badly discolored or dark or crooked, the dentist may need to prepare the tooth first to make room for the porcelain. However sometimes it is possible to simply bond the veneer onto the front of your existing tooth without having to first remove any tooth structure with the drill. These are called “no prep veneers”.
You can have a beautiful smile in as few as two appointments, usually one to three weeks apart. At the first appointment the teeth are prepared, if necessary, and impressions are taken . Provisional (temporary) veneers may be placed for you to wear while the laboratory is fabricating your porcelain veneers. At the second appointment the porcelain veneers are tried in for your approval and then bonded into place. Once bonded into place they are very strong and durable.
With proper care your new smile can last for many years. Proper care includes:
- meticulous homecare of proper brushing and flossing daily
- using your teeth to chew food not as tools
- don’t use them to open bags or other items
- don’t hold nails or pins, etc. between your teeth
- don’t use them to bite off hard items such as ice, candy canes, hard dry jerky, etc.
- wear a nightguard to protect them from grinding (bruxism) and clenching your teeth while you sleep
