Ask someone what part of the body they are more attracted to. Some of them would say the hair, the eyes, or the legs, but most of them would agree that the sparkly white teeth of a person will definitely make that person more attractive to anyone. The importance of healthy teeth, however, is far beyond appearance, because the teeth also give people idea of how you take care of yourself.
A study conducted by researchers from the universities of Leeds and Central Lancashire proves the importance of having healthy teeth.
Researchers from the universities of Leeds and Central Lancashire took pictures of models before digitally changing the colour and spacing of their teeth. Three shades were used – a yellowish brown, healthy white, and startling white, which can only be achieved by bleaching. They then showed the photos to 150 young men and women and asked them how attractive they found the models. Unsurprisingly, yellow teeth were unpopular, while widely spaced teeth were also deemed less attractive.
The participants find the models with yellow teeth and widely spaced teeth unattractive. The male participants leaned more towards attraction while the female participants tend to see the models as their competition. The researchers believe that teeth are used as an indicator of someone’s age. The color and arrangement of teeth also indicates diet irregularities that a person has, childhood illnesses, and other genetic disorders.
